James speaking -

The hospital made arrangement for the flight to Billings, Montana. They can’t transport a patient who is unstable so it took 3 hours to prepare Matthias for the flight. Transportation could have been in a plane or a helicopter. It was a helicopter.

When Stef told me I had to go with Matthias, I thought I was going to be sick ... carsick, actually helicopter sick. I had never flown in a helicopter before and when I shared this with the pilot he quickly showed me where the bag was. The flight was 32 minutes and Dr. Carroll was waiting. We entered St. Vincent’s Hospital from the roof and we came in a back door to the NICU. NICU stands for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. I was standing by Matthias’ transport crib when Dr. Carrol examined him. I remember thinking how small he was and how small his umbilical cord was. Maybe that was the problem. Maybe that was his only problem. Now that he could get nourishment other ways, he could thrive; but that was not to be.
